Half way thru a Ivory Micarta finish

I just put my first set of Ivory Micarta slabs on a Bowie. I kept starting to get nasty black specks and realized just how porous this stuff is, so I stopped. I am down to a 120grit.
What is the best way to finish this beast and still get a nice sheen/shine on the handle?

Phezzer, you shouldn't be getting spots in Ivory Micarta, which is paper based Micarta and non-porous. It sounds to me like you have white linen micarta, which is not really Micarta but another brand of phenolic handle material. My suggestion would be to keep sanding to finer grits, and maybe scrub it with soap and water to try to get rid of the black spots. You might also try switching to a Scotch Brite pad and see if that doesn't work more cleanly.

If you were sold that as Ivory Micarta, I would be unhappy if I were you.

Thanks.
I have gotten rid of the spots with a little elbow grease. What grit should I take the handle finish too? I am afraid if I use a buffing wheel the black from the steel will migrate into the handle material. Has this been a problem for anyone else?

Yeah the buffer will turn the micarta black.
Try using alcohol to clean off the black.

Hand sand too 800 grit and then buff lightly
using lot's of buffing compound do not be stingy with it because this stuff is nasty to clean up if you dont

I normally sand to an even 400 grit then buff like hell. You may need to use a fresh buff if it's too black, but I don't. Just use more white compound.

I sand to 800 grit and use green chrome to buff with. Use more compound when it stars to turn black. Only use soap and water when cleaning the ivory micarta.

Hello Phezzer,

My choice is Fabulustre with a muslin cloth wheel that I only use for handle material.Make sure the buff looks clean before using. Then no dirt gremlins will work there way into your smooooth finish. Oh when I'm done with the buff it is placed into a zip lock bag to keep any dirt out during storage.

Good luck
Jeff
