Here is one forged from 5 inches of 1 inch square 1045. A little bit of punch and file work. Pour in place pewter end caps and bands, Curly maple haft stained with home made vinegar and steel wool stain

Very, very Nice Stuart :thumbup: :thumbup: Tell me more about the pour in place pewter . Did I tell you how nice that Hawk is ;)
 
Thanks David. The way I do the pewter is put brass screws in the ends and then take manilla file folders and tape around the ends,heat the pewter till it melts. Checking the temp. with a tooth pick to be sure it does not scorge the wood and pour and let cool. The bands are carved out about 1/8 deep or a little less and under cut some what to hold the pewter in. The secret to getting a good pour on the bands is to Take a #2 pencil and color inside the whole cut,this will let the pewter flow around the handle alot better
 
The stain in made by taking apple cidar vinegar and soaking steel wool, rusty nails,barb wire or what ever you have. It takes about six to eight weeks of soaking. Then you strain it and apply using a heat gun in between coats.

Very nice work. Love the pewter work. Got to give that a try sometime myself if I ever get the time.
