Hammer vs. Spike...which do you prefer, and why?

When I first contracted Hawkitis I thought the spike hawk ruled all. However, as time passed, I began to see the value of the hammer as a tool and subsequently decided that the hammer end if of great value. My spikin' daze are over! ;)

What do you think?

the hammer poll makes a handy tool, and is still a great weapon too. I have a hammer poll rifleman hawk, and intend to get a spike eventually too. I throw a lot, so I like the though of increasing the sticking potential with a sturdy spike.

Hammer or Spike?
That is what I was having a hard time deciding when I wanted to get a hawk…. Then I seen the SOG Hawk and is has Hammer checkering on the sides and it also has spike, Best of both worlds. I have used it as a hammer and it work every well.

definitively hammer until the end...like vector001 said .." a small one will do"!!!absolutely true.
On the contrary as an example rifleman hawk is too much heavy in order to be a Tomahawk,
To that point I would buy one ax!
On my opinion.

Unless killin' Zombies in Kevlar helments is the task, hammer is the best choice IMHO. A hammer is a very useful tool. $0.02.

Rifleman Hawk is heavy. It is a fun thrower and hits super hard, however I would not pack it on a long hike. would go with much lighter hawk for that.

Is it wrong that I want to buy one of the Poll Axe's from CS and make another shorter handle for throwing it???

That would be a monster hawk! I don't know how functional it'd be as a thrower, due to it's weight, but it sounds cool as one of those "just-for-the-hell-of-it" projects.

I'll cast my vote for the hammer poll, too (unless I know ahead of time I'm gonna be facing kevlar helmeted zombies:D). The hammer makes more sense as a general tool.

Ya, it would be a monster hawk. It would be heavy and the hammer would be good for nothing but breaking stuff, but I think if I put it on a 20ish inch handle I could throw it one handed, and if I wanted to throw it with both hands I think that would work as well. it would definately be a "just for the hell of it" but might just have enough oomph for the KHZ (Kevlar Helmeted Zombies) as well.

Weapon-wise, I don't think it would matter all that much between a spike and a hammer poll.

Yeah a spike will puncture and rip flesh on the follow through. It would definitely puncture a skull too.

But you wouldn't want to be hit by the hammer poll either. It won't puncture... but it will surely shatter bones on impact... and a solid blow to the skull would most likely be lethal.

In the middle ages, there was a weapon which combined both a spike and a hammer poll - the warhammer.

I wouldn't enjoy being struck by either business end of one of those things.

That leaves the remaining difference a choice between usage as a tool. Spike or hammer? Which is the better tool?

I have and have used both.

The hammer poll is VERY useful. It's a hammer with about the same sized striking-face as a standard claw hammer, and it can do any hammering job a claw hammer can do.

The spike it also a useful too. It's excellent for puncturing cans of juice, or whatever canned fluid you might take camping. It's my tool-of-choice in the kitchen for puncturing cans of tomato juice when I make chili. You can of course do this with the 'hook' at the bottom of a tomahawk's bit, but it's a little trickier. The spike does it with ease. The spike is very good at chipping ice in the winter time. You can also sink the spike into a log so you can use both hands to hold large material you need to slice by sliding it over the 'hawk's bit. The spike also can be used as a pick for digging in hard soil.

Depends on your "application". I dig the cosmetics of spike 'hawks but I've had some rebound off targets and send the spike back my way. Course the dynamics would change greatly with targets that more absorb the energy of a blow rather than redirect it.
Stay Safe,

I guess it really depends on the application.I can see how having a spike for throwing would be useful. However,in combat,I always thought one of the first rules of weaponry was not to have a dangerous end pointed toward the user.

I just got back from a weekend of camping and used my Riflemans Hawk constantly and had use for the blade and the hammer multiple times. I will take the hammer any day because of my uses for the hawk. The edge even held very well all weekend and all I did was file it a bit before I went so it did not even have a super fine edge and it still chopped great. The Hammer worked very well also. The spike gets the +1 on the looks for me and the hammer gets the +1 for use.

Historically, both the natives and the white frontiersmen who had spike tomahawks would intentionally often blunt the tips on the spikes. It is believed to be for that very reason.

Having a blunted tip would eliminate the chance of having an opponent push the spike into you during hand-to-hand combat, yet it would still have the ability to dig as a pick and certainly it would still be able to puncture a skull if sufficient force was used.

This is very interesting. Where did you find this out? I've never heard that before. Makes sense, though.

I recall a visitor from the Ohio Historical Society mentioning it at a Knap-In about 7 years ago.

Hammer. I agree with NuclearWinterRat1. Firstly I've heard of axes/tomahawks rebounding off certain targets. I wouldn't like the idea of a spike coming my way about head height. I don't need a new blow hole, doing fine with the one I have.

Secondly the application range of a hammer poll hawk is larger I expect. I use the beard of my axe to hook wood/items closer to me so the spike isn't so useful to me as a hook. As a weapon I expect the blade end is lethal enough and for heavy (crash axe type use) the hammer poll is more suitable to avoid rolling/dinging/chiping the edge or spike.

All in all, hammer for me.
