Hammerin in LA

Hey everyone! I was wondering if there are any knifemakers in the Gulf Coast region of LA, MS, TX who would like to get together at the beginning of June for a small hammerin at my place? I live in Denham Springs, LA and do not know of any group of knifemakers that get together in this area. I think it would be a great chance to make friends, teach, learn and swap stories among fellow knifemakers. This is just a preliminary question to judge interest. My place is not big, but it is open. If we can work something out, I think it would be good to meet occasionally.

If you could move it up to Shreveport then it would be easy for me. Might could still make it other wise, just depends on the weekend and all that jazz.

I understand about the travel. If there is a large interest up in the north part of LA, then I dont mind traveling at all as long as there is a place to play at. This is a first time for me trying to plan something like this. Basically, what I have in mind is.... Get a couple of knifemakers together and just see what happens. But if people are going to be driving several + hours to do this, I can understand that we def. need to all talk and have some plans made. I have available one coal and one gas forge. I also have a 100lb and a 175 lb anvil that we can all abuse. I plan on this taking place at my house that has a 12x10 lean too in the back with all my forging equipment under. Not the fanciest shop around, but beats what I had two years ago in Iraq (didnt even own an anvil). :o Anyway guys, list any reccommendations that you might have. I plan on feeding you guys something. If anyone has hosted something like this before, please clue me in. I will get back on tomorrow once I have time to sit down and make a list of what I will/can provide.

Sounds like this would be a great time, depending on the weekend I would like to be counted in. North Louisiana would be my first choice so we could get some of our Texas and Arkansas neighbors to join as well.
 
We could do it at my house. I have a forge, power hammer and plenty of room. 800 SF shop and overhang where forge and power hammer are set up. Nice anvil and leg vice and most important, cold refridge for refreshments. Also plenty parking space.
 
There was an ABS hammerin in Old Washington, AR a litte more than 100mi from Shreveport.
If Dan has one Id be intrested in going.

Sounds like you have a "Great" idea. Well, it does seem like there is a hugh response from the north, so I guess I will have to travel north of I-10. :eek: I will suggest that no matter where it is held, that we have it on the first weekend in June which is the 6th and 7th. Just let me know how that sounds to you guys. Would you guys like to have a one day or two day event? I am open for either. I can bring some anvils, forges, cold drinks, and an assortment of steel that we can use. I also have some wrought iron I need to get rid of. :D

Lets do it. Everyone is welcome. I will plan some demos of making Damascus etc. Anyone is welcome to chime in.
 
OK! Good talking to you guys on Saturday morning. I will get with a few guys here in the South LA area and make plans to get a hotel room and stay the night up there. I plan on having some fun. Plan for the first weekend in June. Just let me know what starting time is good for you Dan.
