What is the difference between a normal hammer and a forging hammer metal wise

Usually not much as far as type of metal is concerned. Shape of face, weight, balance, etc makes a forging hammer.

1045, 4140, 4340 would be my suggestions for hammers . 4140 is very available , reasonable price and makes an excellent hammer.
