Hammock camping

Great thread

I have been debating,A hennessy or a new backpacking tent. I think I may go for one of the Hammock Bliss ones instead and still be able to pick up a tent.

I never liked the idea of the Hennessey due to the bottom entry/exit. In fairness to them, I've never used one, but the idea doesn't appeal to me.

I changed both of the suspension systems to straps with cinch buckles, making it easier to both hang and adjust the hammocks.

Are you referring to something like a truck strap? Edit: Never mind. I just did some research on the topic and realized that I was pretty far off the mark. :o

The bottom entry on Hennessy hammocks is really pretty cool if you think about it. No zippers to bind or blow out or catch your sleeping bag or add weight. The velcro (which may weight as much as a zipper in reality) is sewn on well. It's positioned toward one end and once you're in and you close it up, you're snug as a bug in a rug. I often keep my pack below the entrance/exit and if I need anything, I can easily reach through and find what I need.

The downside is that if you've got no good trees to set up with and you just prop up the fly with trekking poles, it's a bit of a wriggle to get in and out. Be sure to bring a pee bottle in with you on those occasions. It might also be a bit loud in the middle of the night when you RIIIIIIIIIP out of it to take care of business. Your site mates may not appreciate the noise although some of the guys I camp with snore so loud a little velcro noise isn't going to make a difference.:D

I ran into some nice looking hammocks this weekend and wondered if anyone has used them...They seem like they would work well for this application so I thought I'd ask in this thread. They are nylon and don't have any holes in them ( the material is about the weight of a parachute) they claim to hold 400 lbs and are made by a company called E.N.O. ( I didn't find the written out name of the company only this on the logo). They came with carabiners to hang them with and fold into a 4"x4" pouch that is made to the side of the bag ( so it could be used for a small gear holder at night. The were being sold in the Vera Bradley store at Hamilton Place Mall in Chattanooga so all the info I have on them is from that one visit (can you tell I was in the mall with my wife? lol)

ETA: I think I just found them on the net apparently it's Eagles Nest Outfitters who makes them. The website claims 18 oz for a single and 22 oz for a double and they say it packs to the size of a softball but it looked to me like it could be packed smaller. They also have a "lounger" it's like a hammock recliner...pretty cool.

I camp exclusively in a Clark North American. However,my first hammock was a Mosquito free hammock bliss.for 40 bucks it was a great trainer for hammocks.
I find that if you put a bedroll in the bottom of the hammock it increases the comfort level 10 fold.

The Travel hammock, Skeeter Beeter... Great product. I don't know how it compares to the others but it will keep you off the ground, Keep the bugs at bay and will not cost you a few hundred. I have one and love it. I already had a tarp so it was not an issue.

Hope it helps.

I noticed somebody else mentioned them earlier, but I've got a Moskito Hammock by Byer and it's held up well so far. I've only had it a year, but I've used it quite a few times and no problems thus far. It's affordable by anyone's standards, also. I got mine at a camping/hiking store in Pigeon Forge, TN so I know they could be had for less money on-line, as well.

go to bensbackwoods.com he has good prices and the hamocks i got are realy tough and lite.

I've had an Eagles Nest Outfitter double for a couple yearsl, along with the bug net and rain tarp. The slap straps make it easy to set up, and because it's modular, you only set up what you need: fly for rain, net for bugs, both to be sure, neither if you just want to snooze in the sun.
I can't compare it to any of the other mentioned models, but I'm happy with mine.

I Just ordered A no seeum netting hammock from Hammock bliss on Amazon.com for under 60$.

I got the sinch straps too and the whole thing shipped for under 100$
