I'm asking for suggestions/opinions on a good stable hammock for backcountry hiking/survival....
Price point would be no more than $150.00 and It has to keep me DRY and have a bug netting !

I've been researching every manufacturer out there, I just value the ESEE clan's men mind set.....

Thx guys and gals....

Tell you the honest truth, I use a military jungle hammock and I added an Etowah tarp to it and modified 16ft ratchet belts to stay with the hammock and works fantastic, with the cost of hammock ($30) tarp($30) and ratchet belts ($15) I have a great set up

Not enough time to make my own (there are online instructions), I purchased a Grand Trunk Skeeterbeeter Pro (can sleep my wife, myself, and our 2-yr-old child all together) and a PU-coated nylon tarp from campmor.com some years back. Sil-nylon is lighter & more durable (also more expensive) so you may prefer that...

Oh, forgot to mention I've got a jungle hammock setup but recently bought a cheaper Byer of Maine Moskito hammock for $30 shipped. I'm tarp shopping now.

if I may , get a tarp with Tabs not grommets, alot easier to repair in the field.1 reason I choose Etowah tarps

A bit out of your price ceiling but I have camped in a clark jungle hammocks north american for half a decade. In every temp from -15 Celsius to +35 Celsius, torrential rain, heavy snow my Clark has seen me through a lot.
However my first hammock was a hammock bliss.my brother-in law camps in one now. They give some good options for a beginner hammock system.

Yep, tabs seem to be the way to go from what I've read. The price difference between a cheaper one and an Etowah is about $20 for the size I'm looking at, so I'll probably just buy once, cry once.

Hey tony, I am like the OP and thinking about getting into a hammock setup. Do you have a pic of your set-up?

Opinion: For playing around with a crazy woman they're great. For sleeping, I hate 'em.

I dont have a pic but next time I set it up, I'll snap a pic....
the Jungle hammock has the netting and a small tarp built in but I like an oversize tarp to keep my gear dry too reason for the Etowah tarp. The ratchet belts ,I remove the hooks on the ratchet side and install clevis instead, mount to metal O-Ring on hammack and the 16ft ratchet belt works great ,no more tying or guessing length of rope. Lazy mans way or thinking man however you look at it.

Cool. That answered alot of questions. Can you get the jungle hammock @ an army/navy store or is there a place online? I did a google search and came up with alot of GI "style" hammocks but you never know when it says "GI style" what you are getting.

Just don't get comfortable or just prefer to sleep on the ground?

No matter how I "pitch" a hammock my feel inevitably fall asleep. I've had people try to put them up for me so that wouldn't happen. Still happens. Trust me, I wished it wasnt that way because I would much rather have the ease of a hammock than using a bivy.

;) never much of a waterbed fan either I suspect :D

Not at all!! The only time I slept on a waterbed made me sick. Seriously. It wasn't a waveless model. Those things are good for one thing only: rubbing down with cooking oil, getting naked with a woman and having fun.

Ok. Cool. I have never used one and really want to try one for this season. I really just think it will be easier.

I found one for under 50 and figured that wasn't horrible to start out with. It was a "style" version so that may be the way I go so I don't have to drop to much money on something I just wanna try out.

Thanks

I agree ! try a less expensive version incase you dont like'em or can't sleep in it , then your not out much $$ ,I would also get some ratchet belt 12-16ft,save you alot of time....
