I just heat treated a small (really small) drop point blade. While I was finish sanding it, i kept seeing this "smudge". It took me a few minutes to realize that it was a hamon line.

Will a mild etch with vinegar or mustard help highlight this? I don't have anything else around right now that I could use.

yes.. 50/50 hot water vinegar. make sure you degrease the blade before hand.
dip the blade in and let it sit for 3min, rinse, rub with flitz or semichrome . repeat untill you get the desired results

Flitz is a metal polish. I use Ferric chloride and vinigar soaked 0000 steel wool to wash off the FC. Here's the result.
