Hello every one
does any one know were to get hamon clay on line? Or can it be made in shop? one other thing I finally broke down
and got a smart phone and I was wondering does this forum have a app? I was thinking this might be a easy way to
up load some pictures.

First, I have used watered down furnace cement. Backed on onto the blade at a low temp (300 degrees F if i recall) to dry it out and keep it from bubbling off during heat treat. I know there are several other process/ products used. The app I use is Tapatalk. It allows easy uploading of pictures. I think most others who use an app for this forum use tapatalk as well.

Satanite is inexpensive an easy to use, and if you have a propane forge you likely have it on hand anyway. When I built my first forge I bought a 20lb box of it from High Temp Tools and have been using it for hamons ever since.

I bought satanite from Hightemptools, as mentioned already. Also mentioned was furnace cement. I was looking for a hamon clay a few years ago, and found a tube of Rutland's Black Furnace Cement. It was rated for very high temps, above heat treating temps, so I gave it a go. To my surprise, it did produce a nice differential hardening line. It's thick, black, gooey stuff, best to get a thin layer, sort of a challenge with the Rutlands, much easier with Satanite.

I have used Rutlands Black furnace cement. Works quite well. I did recently order some satanite to try.

I use satanite. I have used the black Rutland's, too.

Walter Sorrells has an excellent series of DVDs on making a hamon, blade finishing ( togi) and more., They are well worth having.

Also, use the custom search engine. The whole process of yaki-ire and hamon has been heavily discussed and there are many good tutorials.

I've been using sairset. I'm happy with the results I'm getting. The clay is just one piece of the puzzle. A lot of variables come together to make this work well.

Thank you guy's for all the help I found some satanite on amazon and I will definitely be checking out those tutorials Stacy.
I've got this vision of a tomahawk with a hamon that I can't get out of my head. and thanks for the app suggestion.
