hey everybody.. i posted this knife int he gallery.. but then.. the guy who wanted it.. asked me to buff out the blade.. so i usd my electric buffer.. and it really cleaned up.. and made the hamon sharper, but also "cloudier" this is exactly what i have been trying for.. and i blame Walter Sorrells.. but.. i dont know what to call it all.. what is it that makes it cloudy and.. delicate.. like htat? the pictures really dont do it justice.. but i at least was able to get some of it on film
(and no that isnt a toilet in the background.. i keep thinking that everytime i see the pics)
thanks

This one time, when my toilet broke we went right in the garbage ca......nevermind.

Looks great Chris, very FROSTY.

dosnt a buffer basicly "smear" metal?

not a metallergist but it could be that the hamon smeared like lipstick from a delicate line to a wispy cloud because of this

I believe you are referring to the nie/nioi crystals in the hamon line?

The delicacy means you are doing it right.

You should visit someone(at a show or maybe someone who lives nearby?) really knowledgeable about japanese style swords and ask them to explain everything in person, it will help clear everything up.

no no, the metal is not smearing. thats for lipstick. i dont have any qualification to make this call other than i think of my self as a logical guy who has a good grasp of steel. if i understand correctly, you brought the knife to a finer finish than before and the hamon was more feathered and delicate. i would say this is because at the coarser finish only the most defined part of the hamon showed, and more of the details came out at the more refined polish. just as the hamon doesnt show when its rough ground (or if it does, not well) and some hand sanding brings it to life.
and if im wrong or right, i just have to tell you, your work is beautiful. because you seem to be the only other knife maker on bf my age i find myself in awe that your work is so masterful and mine is still armature, barely good enough to sell. keep it up!

Cool knife, but why did you take the pic over the toilet?:DJust kidding, looks like a trash can. Is that cable?

whats this Walter Sorrell DVD you've mentioned a couple of times, and where do you get a copy?

by the way cool knife:thumbup::D

Hey.. thanks everybody!
i had forgotten about those definitions on ksky. i looked at them before i really had any clue what was going on.. thanks!
as for the polish iw ould have to agree... i think that it just took the blade to a higher polish.. i have never taken the cable to a high polish before (yest it is cable) and i have been really leary of the electric buffer.. but i might use it a bit more... it worked really nice.. and the blade has an even finer edge on it.. i tried shaving hair with it.. and i was doin it an nothing seemed to be happening.. till i blew on my arm... yeah.. well i will be wearing long sleeves till the hair grows back.

the DVD (there are actually two of them) were a HUGE help, and can be found here:

he does some CRAZY nice stuff.

hey LK..i have to say as a young knifemaker we have the edge (no pun intended) cause we get to absorb all the knowledge of these older guy who know it already... so we have it MADE...
thanks for the support!

Basically you removed the oxide layer that the ferric chloride leaves when it comes out of the etch. It also polished the high spots and leaves the lower parts dark giving nice contrast.
