Does anyone know how this type of hamon is acheived? It looks like the blade was etched but the edge is still polished. There is still an uneven hamon line on the polish. Any help?

My only guess is that the blade was polished first, then etched in a manner that would produce the uneven line.

You can use a wax or lacquer resist. Polish the blade then paint on the resist in the pattern desired, then etch, by the looks of the pic, pretty heavily.

Looks like a San Mai to me... some sort of straight steel core with high layer damascus sandwiched on the outside.

i don't know if the same things would apply but in terms of japanese kitchen knives.....different sharpening stones produce differnt finishes on the edges,.....one is a misty haze that looks similar to the top secton of the blade.....it depends alot on what steel it is and what stone you use though.....hope that helps some....ohh nad you can get stones that are really small to do the same effects.....i can't remember what they are called....maybe slipstone?......they are really small pieces of stones....i have some and they restore the finish to the bevel of your knife.....it ain't easy to do well though....ryan
