Hamon utility with flaming ebony

Keith, that carving is amazing on the handle! The knife is a beauty and the sheath is fantastic, overall just a great piece! I am curious, what do you use to do the carving and stippling on the handle like that? The handle is probably the most eye drawing part of this knife for me, its just so hard to NOT look at it.

That is a work of art. I'd love to see a WIP on a piece like this.

Thanks Jake,
I mark out the handle with pencil and cut the flames in with a triangular file and a hand graver. Once I have the pattern marked out, I use a number 13 burr in the flexible shaft ( dremmel ) and carefully cut around the pattern, once this is done I stipple the rest ( like colouring in ) in a manner similar to sending morse code I geuss?:) Got to be carefull! One slip and its all over. Next time I do one I'll put up a WIP as protourist suggested. Thanks again.
Cheers Keith

Rather than start a new thread, thought I'd just add onto this one. Here is another blade I finished a while ago, fairly similar flames. Don't have the specs on this blade. The handle material is synthetic ivory.

I love the lines on that blade. The carving just takes it to another level of cool.

Keith that is a beautiful blade as well and I agree with Mack, the lines are great!

As a side thought, with the way that you do your flame carving, have you ever thought of inlaying a contrasting color or metal in around your flames for like a depth effect? I may be way out in left field here, but I just thought of how neat it would look to see like a dark color around the flames on that ivory handle. Just curious

Thanks Jake and Mack for the comments. Now I don't mind left field, I have done some inlay work but nothing as large or intricate as this. I do have a whole swag of blacklip pearl. Hmmmm, sounds interesting ? Ya never know unless you have a go, thats what I reckon. I do not know about a wire inlay around the flames but its worth some research. Oh dear, I'm going to have nightmares tonight.
Cheers Keith

Hah, I'm not trying to give you nightmares, it was just something that popped into my head when I saw the white handle after seeing the black handle. I think you could have some really cool looking designs!
