Im getting ready to attempt my first hamon with some 1095 on a small drop point blade. I have absolutely ZERO experience with this and have read several forums about it but not sure if the canola oil I have been using is sufficient enough to cool it down fast enough. I have read that water quench or a brine works as well, but I havent grown a pair big enough to quench in water :) any tips?

Parks 50 quench oil. Nearly as fast as water but less severe. You can try water but make a test piece. Rough grind a blade and quench in water. See what happens.

You can get full hard 1095 in canola heated up to 120-130, and you'll also be able to get some hamon, but I don't think you'll get quite the activity or full effect you would with Parks or brine.
