Hand buffing/polishing plastic scales?

You can sand them smooth with 400 grit wet/dry automotive sandpaper, buff them at 90 degrees with 0000 steel wool, and polish them lengthwise with Simichrome. Then paste wax them.
 
There's an article on www.sosakonline.com (choose article, then modification/modding). It worked even for translucent handle of SAK. Or you can try searching UnknownVT post on it .. I remember it's him that shows the trick.
