Any knife that is made from 1095 or W1 should do but if you're unsure you may want to have the knife tested before making a file out of it.

historically speaking, files were much more valuable than knives so up until the mid 1800s when files started being machine cut and mass produced it would probably be more common to see a file made from a knife than to see a knife made from a file =P

I thought all knives were made from W2.
