Hand Drill Fire Help - I have materials finally!

Talfuchre,
If it's anything like Yucca smalliana (which is what it looks like in the vid) then there's nothing to it. Same prep as anything else. It will almost make an ember by just looking at it. Good stuff.

I have been trying in the garage just now - and I am drilling the spindle through the hearth.

Is my spindle too small in radius? How big should the business end be of the spindle?

I'd never heard of Sotol before, so I had to look it up. It sure looks a lot like the Yucca we have out here, and if that's so, then it should be an excellent fire starter. Should work the same as Yucca. Can you show us any pictures of what you have so far?

Is your drill from the same piece of stem as the fire board? If not it may be harder and drilling through.
If it is then I'd try decreasing the pressure a little. Also I carve the bottom side of the notch ( on the bottom of the board) wider to allow more dust to drop through usually making a coal quicker.

You may also want to change your notch shape. Some experts swear the key hole is better than the triangle for the hand drill. Whatever works!!!

Yeah that's what I meant when I said the notch should be wider at the bottom. I never knew it was called a key hole.:o Thanks, abo4ster.
Talfuchre,
Another thing that I thought about was drill size. I've drilled through before ,too and my drill was to small. It was about the size of a dime, it should probably be about the size of your thumb.
Let us know if you get it going.
