Hand Drill Fire - SUCCESS!!!

I have done something I have always wanted to do - I have started fire with merely two 'sticks'.

As the other thread discussed - I got some Sotol this weekend near San Antonio while myself and the kids were out hiking.

I have been messing with it to try and get my own fire - and after some experimentation (I had the drill FAR to small at the business end) I have my first fire.

I have to say, though, that this material is hard NOT to get fire from when you have a little tecnique down. I am sure other materials are MUCH harder. However, I am still proud of myself.

I managed to get three more fires after the first one (I was wearing thin leather gloves to prevent against too much pain - after all - I have Philosophers hands). Here are some pics.

I had to toss in the gratuitous knife picture. Man that Kephart is growing on me.

Nice one Man.... Hand drill fire is Something I have yet to accomplish... Maybe over the summer... Very cool man.

Congrats dude! I'm only just getting the hang of making bow drill fires reliably. Nothing quite so pleasing as a matchless fire, eh?

Great job, congrats! I still need to get the bowdrill down as well.

I know how you feel. I just got my first fire this weekend as well. Congratulations to you

Nice, I'm having trouble finding stuff to use for a bow, and a rock here. Are sticks....man, I hate suburbs.

Excellent work T, this is one I'm going to work on next year when the weed stocks become more available around these parts. I found the technique a little on the difficult side to get working right and when I tried it with Doc, I fatiques after a fairly short period of time. I think I was too tense in the shoulders, and subsequently learned that to be a problem with my bowdrill method.

Anyhow, good show! What was the hearth made from?

Congrats! It's a good feeling when you get your first, very satisfying. I like to challenge myself with wet materials and only a SAK (sometimes a Classic). Your fire lighting skills in all areas improve immensely. Personally I prefer the hand drill to the bow drill in terms of ease, but sometimes you can't find the right materials for the hand drill. BTW I think a good tinder bundle is the hardest to get right. Now comes all the experimenting with different types of wood!

Well - now that I am a professional - let me.... shut the hell up... ;)

The hearth was Sotol as well - it is essentially the easiest combo to use in the world.

But hey...
