Hand Finishing Blades

I recently finished a kit knife, I'm not quite ready to grind my own blades and there is no room in my apartment. I hand finished the blade and bolsters with 2000 grit sandpaper to get it nice and shiny. I noticed though that it seems to scratch REALLY easy.

It looks fine from a distance but when you hold it up really close the scratches don't look so good.

So my question: is it better to only finish to maybe 600grit, so that new scratches don't show up as much? Thanks in advance.

Hey Guys...

Garrison..

Yaa Really nice looking blade...

I can't answer the question for you,, however I stood and watched Wally Hayes hand sand a Waki for about two hours..

I can tell you,, that one Hell of a F-ing Job...

I would have just Bead blasted the bloody thing.. LOL

It did turn out Very nice though...As does all of Wally's swords...

Don't worry they all get scratched soon as the are used in any way. We make them nice so the customer will appreciate them and they look good but it is inevitable that if any knife is used it will get marked.

I agree with Mr. Mayo on this one. That very reason is why I stop at 600 grit on a hand sanded finish. Also, 600 grit is pretty easy for your customers to find, and then you can point them at great info like This tidbit from J. Neilson.
