Hand forging a hawk

That's a lovely hawk, glad to see it survived the crack! Oh, and that bad things also happen to other good people :>

Great thread, Ray! I especially like and appreciate you showing how you overcame that crack. Many threads of this type just die when that happens. Thanks for sticking it out.

I came real close to pulling the plug on this thread when that crack happened. I'm glad I was able to save the hawk and this thread. When I first started this thread I was only going to do the forging part and stop there but the interest was here. Other than the video that Bruce Evans put out on making hawks a few years back there really isn't much information to be found. Maybe this might help stimulate more interest in making them. Guess I felt like giving back also.

I got the haft pretty much shaped and hand sanded down to 80grit at this time. Its real close to being finished. I took a few more pictures to.

Here I am using the KMG hawk haft carver attachment.

Using some elbow grease and 80grit paper.

This is where I'm at right now. Hey Scott, there's some pretty nice grain in the hickory you gave me. Thanks a lot! The other thing is my osic measuring stick and pattern maker.

This is like a Bob Ross "recovery".
You know halfway through you think the painting is ruined and then at the end.....Ta-daaa!
Great looking hawk Ray, Thanks for taking the time to break down the steps for us rookies.
I never knew oosic could be used as an axe handle :jerkit:  :D

that looks really nice, i appreciate you showing all the steps. looking forward to final finishing

This osic would make a good club. A little heavy for an ax handle.

Had enough for today. I got the haft sanded down to 320 and dyed. Tomorrow I'll steel wool the haft and then start oiling it with Watco Teak Finish. I'm going to put a butt cap on the end of the haft. It will be real similar to whats on the knife.

Go Ray! Can't wait to see the conclusion. I'll have to start calling you Homer if you keep coming up with these epic tales:thumbup:.

i like the stain Ray, and the buttcap will make a nice contrast on top and bottom.

Looking good... why are you wearing all that stuff in your shop? It cold or something :D

Will, I look back to when I started this thread. I was bitching about how warm it was. I actually should have worn my thermal coveralls yesterday but the weight of them alone wears me out. My shop temp and the outside temp are identical except for when I have the forge running. I think it was around 40 in there yesterday morning. I even had shoes on. :D

I really see myself finishing up this hawk today. I probably said that yesterday also. Today's the day. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will see some attempts at a few more hawks by other makers. If there are any questions or needing advice contact me and I'll try to get you on track. I really appreciated the interest this thread generated!

Another nice one Ray! I like the added touch on this one of the butt cap...

Now, think you can show us how you do a hawk with a smokin' bowl instead of a hammer or spike??? :D

And with a beard this time!!!!!????? :p
