Hand guard

Hey so I'm about to put a hand guard on one of my first knives. The problem is I have no idea how!! It would greatly help if someone could explain to me the process of it. (It's a full tang knife)

A photo of said knife would be most helpful. However, here goes...
I have not done a full tang knife with a guard but I believe the best way of doing it is slotting the guard all the way out the top, making it a "U" of sorts. I would still recommend cutting the slot out small and using files to get your fit. A pin might not be a bad idea either.
