I have posted, pictures in progress, of the five blades I have been working on for the show in Cambridge. The show is the 26th of October and I am cutting it close, as usual. Thought I might put the scattered pics in one place, to make them more relevant.
The blades were sanded to 1000 grit before etching, then polished out using wd-40 and 0000 steel wool. Clean with Windex often. Burnish with a leather strop, along the edge.

Happy to answer any questions, Fred The sixth pic is a W2 blade the seventh is the 52100 steel.

Nice blades, Fred!

Fantastic blades!!!.. Did you get the hamon from an edge quench or did you cover the back of the blade?

These blades were pbc coated with the clay applied over that and then quenched.

Glad you like them, Fred

Nice blades, Fred!

And do I know it.:o But in early fall, southeast Ohio, it is so beautiful, the weather is just right, the bucks are starting to rut, the beagle wants to run, late evening bass fishing comes to mind. Its a wonder a man gets anything accomplished in the shop.:D

Beautiful blades.
I'll try to finish a (very) small hunting blade like that tonight.
I seriously doubt it'll look anything like yours though :o
Windex doesn't exist over here, so 'll just use simple glasscleaner instead.
Great blades - hope to do something like the bowie soon.

Good luck with the hunter. Post us a pic and show us how it came out.

My blades didn't look like this three years ago. If you stay at it, you will improve also. It takes time. Stick with it if you like what you are doing.

Best regards, Fred

Thanks Fred.
It didn't go as I hoped, so I used a lemon-etch instead.
Rubbed the blade with fine steelwool often, and used Brasso + steelwool to remove oxides. That worked, though not to give as nice a finish as yours.
I'll make this work for me :D

Nice work, been trying to learn it on my own but it's harder than it looks. see ya at the show.

Glad to see you take the hamon etching to the right level.

Too often we see the hardened part "dark". I love seeing it "bright" like what you've got.

Great work!

Daniel,

I have been doing clay hardening for eight years, plus and have "played" with the, hamon, through the many different looks, that it offers. :o Some times with embarrassing results. I am with you:thumbup: I think the hardened edge is too exciting, to cover up. Let it shine.:D

Thanks for posting, Fred
