Hand rubbing ricasso... AFTER putting the guard on

I got a box of shims at the hardware store. They're either wood or the last bunch was some sort of sawdust/plastic composit. They work great for this sort of thing. They're about an inch wide by six inches long tapering from about 1/4" to 1/16". Glue the paper on them and just use the very end. As the paper gets dull. Take it over to the belt grinder and take a little off the end exposing new paper. I got that from Dan Farr except I think he used thin aluminum stock. I like that idea about the aluminum tape to protect the ricasso. Have to try that. Thanks,
Ed

Wulf-- This has been the best post and question in a long time.
A VERRRRRY big thanks to all the good sugestions, on how to clean this up, Things just got easier.

A lot of good suggestions here - thanks everyone for chiming in. Just to follow up, I ended up using razor blades and it seems to have worked out OK.

Here's the knife, by the way

The razor blade trick has worked for me.

Are you all freaked out yet? :) You do realize, they use calipers and 4X loops in that little room, don't you?;)

Nice looking knife, Man!
