Hand sanding of bolsters and wood scales

Hello All,

I have made my first attempt at bolsters on a full tang knife; the scales are zebra wood. I have the final shaping complete, which I did with the belt grinder. How does one go about doing the hand sanding such that the transitions stay smooth, but the metal dust does not get forced into the wood? I have seen this done on some videos with masking tape over one or the other, but doesn't that (potentially) lead to a bit of a bump at the transition?

Thanks,
gene

I rough sand them on the grinder, then use a hard backing to polish them down a bit. Once I get to 400 or so, I tape up the wood and just sand on the bolster as much as possible. The wood is typically so much softer that even with a hard back, you're likely to get a bit of a bump the other way, with the wood low, if you're not careful.
