Hello,

I'm working my way through my hand sanding grit progression, and have been doing straight pulls to get all the j hooks out before I go to the next higher grit. It that extra work that I don't need to doing, or is this a best practice?

What Darrin said. I sometimes go one grit higher say to 1000 wet and then go back to 800 and do the straight pulls with dry paper. Fresh spot on the paper for each pull.

I also do what jdm said. If I want a 600 grit satin finish, I'll sand to 800 straight up and down, and then do straight pills with 600. Gives it a little more shine yet still keeps it "satin"...

You are in charge of pondering the situation.
If you notice you have coarse grit j marks in the plunge use whatever sanding movement it takes to get rid of those without digging that area under the blade plane, straight pulling being one of those suitable technique.

One of the best advice passed here on BF (i wish i could remember who to give credit!!!) on how to get rid of stubborn scratches: DON'T MAKE 'EM IN THE FIRST PLACE!
