You guys are making me feel like my method is from the stone age 
. I just use a regular old 5x.75x.25 brass rod. I make sure it's dead flat by making a few passes on the disk grinder, but other than that I don't do anything special. I tear off a .75" sheet of paper and hold onto it with my index fingers, coat the blade in wd40, and start sanding .
