How do you hand sand the flat without ruining the bevel. I have the bevel up to 600?

Use a steel sanding stick, use straight pulls, be careful.

Keep the paper tight, keep the sanding block in contact with the bevel.

Work both the bevel and the flats at the same time. In other words, when done sanding the bevel with a grit move to the flats and vice versa. Go up through the grits. Hand sanding does seem to take forever. One thing that helps is a sanding rest clamped in a vise. I use a piece of aluminum channel and use a folded paper towel under it and clamp the back side with a piece of mycarta and vise grip. This lets me put some force into the strokes and it goes a little faster.

I just did a bunch of hand sanding yesterday and today. I scrub the blade with the sanding stick till i get close to my finished grit. You only go one direction to prevent j hooks in the scratch pattern. If your doing it to get ready for etching Damascus I have not found going one direction vs scrubbing to make a difference in the finished etch.

I use a hunk of 1 1/4 thick marble cut from a counter top (sink cutout). Lay my sandpaper on it, wet it down well and move the blade back and forth. All on an extra high workbench to hit me just below the ribs when standing.

Okay. I have watched wheeler a lot. I figured I needed to do the flat at same time as bevel. Little late know. Thanks gentlemen

You go thru ur entire progression on the flat and then sand the bevel? How do u stay off the flats while doing the bevels

I'll have the bevel up to at least 600 before starting, and then take the flats all the way to 1500, then go back to the grinder for the bevels. I find it helps keep the grind lines more crisp.
It works for me, it may or may not for anyone else
