Hand-shaped micarta scales on a chopper?

Yeah, 220 is where I started, but much smaller handle on those MS-e's :D ...Need to stock back up on coarser grits. :)

I do want to mention that for a little while there, I thought I screwed up. 320 & 400, the handle got slicker, easy to fumble. After round 1 with 600, I felt the grippiness return, and it trended back upward from there. Just my own experience on the MS-e handle job. :)

I remember reading that, and I think I know what you mean as I have some blades with polished g10 that have that almost tacky feel to them.

On mine right now, the micarta has sort of a soft worn denim (or canvas :D) feel to it. I will probably use them like this a little bit before I do much else. Wish I had some factory hand-shaped to compare it to, I wonder how far they take it.

I love the hand shaped scales. Nice and grippy. When dry. Get em a bit wet tho, and they can feel a little greasy and slippery. Especially G10.

I love hand shaped black micarta. For a while every blade I ordered, I would specify hand shaped black micarta with red liners.........but, they stopped that with OP2W.

I don't have a lot (any?) experience with hand shaped. But of all the mods I'd be willing to try on my knives, getting rid of the texturing on one of my Busse-kin is at the bottom of my list. I love the texturing of the Busse-kin knives. All of them, so far. I have a strong dislike for non-textured grips anymore. Unless the are very fine wood.

I am a little worried about this, I'll have to do some testing and see how it goes. Lately it's been hitting the 90's a lot with anywhere from 60-90% humidity. It won't take long to learn how it handles when everything is drenched with sweat.

I've seen that combo come up before and it's awesome, great taste! I've actually thought about modding my JMD to add red liners under the black micarta. I wouldn't want to hand sand that one unless I added liners since the scales are already on the thin side.

I actually had no interest either until recently. Always thought the machined texturing was very well done, (still do really,) but then I saw Jaxx's MSE thread and started looking into it more and ultimately had to try it. Since I'd already done a bunch of other mods on the DT, I thought it was a good candidate for this.

I don't plan to do any others right away, I want to see how it works for the DT in use first. I figure having the smooth grips on a large blade will magnify the pros and cons either way.

Also, thanks again to all that replied!

This is still a work in progress (there's still some imperfections I got impatient and skipped over), but I decided to take the polish up a couple notches. This is after a total of 60, 150, 320, and 600 grit sanding, then rubbed down with a little oil and lightly buffed:

I didn't have any issues with the very coarse initial finish in use, but I wanted to see what it would be like at a higher polish. Very comfy with a worn denim-like feel before, but now they have that different type of "tackiness" to them and really look nice.

Looks great! :thumbup::thumbup:

That thing looks great, you achieved a very professional look. If only the factory hand shaped scales and smooth bolts were available as an option all the time.
