What are the torx/allen head handle bolts/screws that you see on a lot of the tactical knives? Are they Corby type "sex" bolts or screws threaded into a barrel connector?

I was just looking into the same fasteners. Screws with barrels as far as I have seen. The screws are cheap in stainless, but the damn barrels are about $2 ea. I wonder how hard it would be to tap the right stainless tube?

Have you thought about getting some threaded stand offs from the electronics industry? I've seen them with treads from 2-56 to 8-32 at a local surplus store. I found some 4-40 SS ones (1/4" OD. x 5/8" long) for about 15 cents a piece.

the 4-40 and 8-32 ones are the same ones that some are paying $1.79 for.

Sweet, Thanks Ric!

A friend of mine told me about this electronics supply place where found the stand offs. I went by just to look around because it is very close to my house. They have an amazing supply of stuff. A lot of old school stuff, remember RadioShack about 30 years ago? Put it on steriods. They even have a "use at your own risk" test bench. One of these days I will pick up stuff to make my self an etcher.

There is also a good assortment of screws, I've seen them as small as 1-80, and metrics too. You have to look a little to find the size and style you want or would work for you. http://www.halted.com/ . It is much more fun to go to the store than to look on line. For those of you in the South Bay Area, it's very close to the Sunnyvale Costco.

hey just a thought but aluminum and stainless have a reaction and will corrode. this info came from the boat industry, when I was going to install some stainless hardware on a aluminum boat and was told It would eat each other up here is a link about this. I looked it up before posting http://www.finishing.com/271/67.shtml
If this is wrong sorry just did not want someone to put a lot of work in to his knife and have problems

Erik, these are what I was thinking about for Loveless bolts

They come in a variety of OD sizes, bolt sizes/threads, and materials. I was just wondering if they might be a cheep alternative to buying them as a pair from knife shops as loveless bolts

The trick might be finding stainless all-thread in the correct size.

Now I see where you are going with it. I think they could work if the OD has good tolerances, but I'm not sure. I don't think I would want to put them on, take them off too much before glue up. If I get a hold of some I will play with some scrap material and let you know. I think unless you really want the loveless look, corbys may be more fun to use.

Eric, I'm not really sure they are worth using. Every online place I found required that you buy them in bulk. So I figured out the price to near $1 per 2 standoffs and 1 bolt compared to about $1.5 for a set from knife suppliers. If this was all I used and went through a lot of them then it might be worth it.

If I can get a few to play with that will be one thing, but I don't want to spend $150 to buy 500 of these and they don't work

The threaded standoffs shown in the photo above is what I use for my handles. I get them in aluminum for a 8-32 screw and 1/4 long and counterbore the back of the scales to accommodate . Keeps my scales from moving as long as the hole in the blades tang is reamed at .250 (Diameter of threaded standoff)
They only cost 33 cents at Mcmaster carr. WHich is where I get mine.
They Monkey edge screws J-siah posted about are really nice also, I use them but at that price I tend to put them on my more expensive knives (Damascus etc).
