Hey everyone, I just have a quick question for some of the more tactical guys on here.

I have been using these handle bolts from monkey edge and I really like them. They are very uniform, after I ream a hole they slide in nice and snug every time. however I talked with them today to try and order some and the guy I talked to told me that they are discontinuing large sales permanently and would only sell me one set of 3 and only if I bought one of their Strider handles.

So my question is, are they the only ones who carry that screw and post set? Id like to find the same thing or something similar. the next thing Im going to have to do is order a bunch of standoffs and machine screws. I looked all over and I couldn't find anyone who had one that looked quite as nice.

Thanks, -Josiah

Give VZ Grips in Tallahassee a call. They told me that the make bolts for handles.

Let us know how that pans out, please; I like those better than the usual chain-ring bolts

Brady had those bolts made just for him.

He may be having more made, but it's not a sure thing.

It was a VERY expensive endeavor having them done.

If it was an expensive endeavour...he wasn't doing it right. Those should come from a screw machine shop all day long. If it was expensive it's usually due to the number of pieces that are run. Typically screw machine shops want to run 2500-5000 pcs just to start. If someone can correct me...feel free to jump in. If someone can get me a sample & a qty requirement I'll get a quote from a good friend of mine with 30 (yes, 30) Brown & Sharpe screw machines set up in his backyard shop.

Don't know where you come from, but MANY thousands of dollars for a project that take a few years to payoff qualifies as expensive in my book.

I see folks agonize on this forum over $5 items!

I have no idea of his specifics, but I do seem to remember him saying he had 10K made.

Now let's make up numbers.
$1-$2 a set in machining...
How much for Blackening?
Don't remember if they are heat treated or not, but I think they were.
$10k - $30k all day long.
Could be more.

I am interested in a screw machine guy though, my TiBolt project is keeping 2 machines busy as we speak.

Those are pretty cool, and I can see the $$ behind it.
Lately on fixed blades I just drill and tap the tang. Bolt the scales right on. For small blade .156 or so I use 4-40s for .250 thick I use 8-32 and 10-32. It works great and there is a large selection of screws to choose from. I like the big Pan heads from Mcmaster carr.

I'm sorry...I wasn't trying to be insulting or ruffle any feathers :) but I deal with things like this on a daily basis and possibly on a larger scale. Again, not trying to be insulting. We manufacture a lot of things where I work. There are quite a few pieces that are proprietary to us. We have connections and we do a lot of business with heat treaters and platers so our costs are definitely going to be lower. Typically a lot charge for black oxide is $25-$40. I forget that $10K represents a lot to a company of that proportion. Feel free to pm me if you need a screw machine guy. He is local to me and does great work. He also has the ability to deliver a finished product. (plating/heat treating etc and can/will quote as such)

The reason that I mentioned the guys at VZ is that they make a lot of bolts for their own use with pistol grips and they also told me that they make some stuff for a fairly large mid-tech maker who shall go unnamed. FYI, if you really want something made just for you, I have been told buy one of the knifemaker suppliers that the minimum order is 500 pieces.

I suspect that's true, and may actually be on the conservative side... it's just the way machine shops work. They need to make enough parts to pay for the overhead and labor.

I remember a couple years ago a well-known knifemaker-supply guy had to really jump through some hoops to get a batch of standard Corby bolts made... in copper. Which reminds me... I need more... ;)

Most smaller shops (mine included) will make you whatever quantity you want, but you'll pay for all of the machine setup and cleanup associated with your project.

I'm sure even at 100 pieces of a part like this, it's not considered economical. When I make parts like this, 500 pieces start to look pretty good, but true economy doesn't happen until you reach 5k to 10k pieces.
