I am using stablized wood for the first time, I usually use composite material. See attached pic, this is sappy amboyna that is sanded out to 600 grit and then rubbed with steel wool. Should it be buffed or sanded to a higher grit? Once the final finish is done should it be sealed? I have some tung oil high gloss finish, should I put a couple of coats of this on?? This is cool wood and i want to get it as good as I can.

sorry, have to ask, does that wood come like that, or did you use a dye of some sort for the different colors? just curious, beautiful either way. didn't mean to hijack.

d.
It comes off the tree just like it looks. It is really cool stuff, the picture does not do it justice.

I would'nt use an oil finish on stabilized wood. If there is no open grain, just sand it 'till you're happy with the finish, wax it [Johnsons past wax or equivelent] and polish.

Id probably take it down to 1000 grit or use some ultra fine scotch brite then buff it a bit and add the wax.

With it being stabilized, my recommendation is that since your at 600 grit now, buff it horizontally, then go over it again with the buffer vertically. (For stabilized woods I like Pink No-Scratch compound on a soft buff) Don't get too carried away with pressure, or you'll get "wash-outs". If it looks good under strong light afterwards, finish it off with a good coat of wax.

If you try to apply any kind of finish such as Tru-Oil or anything similar, it will either not set up, or if it does, it will exhibit a "plastic coated" look.

try buffing it out on a loose cotton wheel with white diamond rouge and see what you think before sanding to a finer grit . nothing to lose and some time to save .

I wrote this as Ed's reply was coming in . I've never used pink compound and I would heed his warning about to much pressure .

In my experience I have not gotten the best results until a good bit after 600 I take everything to 2000 and then LIGHTLY buff with Zam or Fabulustre. Have not tried the white rouge or pink no scratch, and if Ed says pink no scratch that's what I'd use. But that's not what I have...:D You will start to see a BIG difference after 800,1000,1500, not so much at 2000 but I still do it...Heck if I had 8000 I'd use it:D
