handle from a hat

One of my buddies was killed in Iraq last year and another mutual friend and co-worker wanted something a little different to keep a piece of him along for the next mission. He was looking for one of my knives to begin with but asked me if i could make a something out of material from our fallen brother's clothing and we figured the hat that he hadn't taken off in years would be the perfect piece, so off i went... hoping it would work. I decided on a Rag Mycarta type mix, figuring the different textures and colours would make a decent mix. It might not be the most amazing look, but it achieved the aim and more importantly i didn't mess up our buddy's tribute too bad, or waste a perfectly good sweat soaked hat. I used west systems slow cure for the resin and it's pretty resistant to impacts, so i figure it should be more than adequate to keep a piece of him along with the group for many years to come.

thanks for looking

Nice work, and it's the only one like it in the world. I'm sure your fallen brother would be proud.

You did a super job! The knife itself looks really good as well. I'm with Frank on a request for a WIP on how you made it all happen.

Thats Nice ! Good colours.
Btw,
Glad you used his hat rather than skivvies !

Ha... no doubt. depending on how long he was out, it might be a similar colour scheme. I have had to go over 20 days on more than one occasion in the same pair and there's not enough shout in the world to fix that... i believe they are called "fire and forget" underwear. Actually the hat is the only thing that was able to be kept for reasons decided by people who make reasons. I don't have much in the line of a WIP on this one, just a few pics of the process that i'll upload and stick on here.

thanks for looking

Good call Frank... next time, I'll do a WIP. one of the guys was mentioning doing another to raffle off for one of the organizations we are affiliated with and this time I'll take way more pics to show the process.
