Handle help again

Wrap sandpaper around a hard flat backer like a file or block of wood. Then sand it down. You'll still sand the wood, but the hard backer will keep the metal from standing proud above the wood scales. Otherwise the wood will sand away quicker and the metal will stick out.

You finish the blade and scales separate and with proper fit and finish your scales will line up perfectly. Then just a little epoxy and some clean up and your done.
