Hi guys/gals. A few BF member and myself are refinishing our knives and have decided to take the handles off. To reattach the handles we wanted to use (I am not sure of the correct names) some threaded spacers and screws like this:

The tubing is .25" in diameter. Can any one point us in the right direction. And what are the correct names for these. Thanks a bunch. :)

no idea what the proper name is called, but you can find tubing that is threaded like that at Ace Hardware. I think it's aluminum, but they may also make it in steel. Crown Ace Hardwares with a lot of odd end parts will have it. the screws are easy enough to find at Ace Hardware as well.

This is what you need right here

this one doesn't show the pics but you probably want stainless steel; if you click on the button above it will show a pic of the brass ones. My guess is you will need to order larger screws as well or you might be able to find some around your area. You will need to calculate what size screw you need which will be hard until you actually have the pivot in hand. I believe scheffield knife supply has these as well and might have more screw options.

The threded tube is called a stand off. You can find then through most any industrial supplier, as well as many electronics suppliers.

Press fit it into the tang. A drop of super glue ,or silver bearing solder, will lock it in place. Torque the scales down evenly, a little at a time from side to side, so as to provide even force on the stand off.

For what it's worth, you can cut brass rod and peen it into a hole in the tang then drill and tap it. This is basically the same thing as using the standoff. You can grind the rod flat after peening and it's pretty much there for life.

I use old brake lines and copper tubing for thong holes. Simply drill holes to the same size as the tubing.

When I squeeze the scales together using epoxy, I squeeze the tubing through the hole on the vice along with squeezing the cutler rivets together. Then once the epoxy has set up, then grind the knife handle to shape. All the handle material, and the fit of the thong hole should come out air tight perfect.
