Handle material?

It's baculum, strictly speaking. Look that oneup in your Funk and Wagnal's.

Actually baculum or baculus is latin meaning stick or "staff". In latin, "argumentum ad baculum" would translate to "argument to the stick", not argument to the penis! Baculum is also a a genus of insects (the so called "walking sticks") and nematodes anong others ... In the knifemaking and crafts trade, 'ossic' is most commonly used word to describe carving material derived from the varying degree of fossilization of the walrus' penile bone. Many other male mammals, including seals and bears have a baculum, but the applications of their baculae for khife handles would probably be negligible. Size does matter!

I took it for a test against a stabilised 8/4 plank of maple.....bad news...handle cracked from the brass fore guard to the first ring in the handle, and the brass guard has a full length spinal stress line.
Awful bad luck there.
Never heard of such a failure before.
Send it back so it can be examined for failure cause.
Can't imagine how that could happen
given the structure of the handle assembly.
Strange.

JJW: Send an email to Uncle Bill and describe the problem.
