handle material

I would like to assemble a kitchen knife. I read a suggestion to use Micarta, Corian, or Dymondwood for the handle material so the finished knife could go in the dishwasher. Any thoughts on handle materials for a knife that might go into a dishwasher? Will stabilized wood hold up in a dishwasher?

No! Plain and simple. I had 200 knives stand up to a commercial dishwasher for four years - but it should not have happened. Those knives should be bought at Wal-mart.

If you have to, then consider synthetics like G10 along with expanded pin slots, slow cure adhesivs and high end materials. If a cusomer wants a cutom knife, they should be willing to committ to proper care.

Having said all that, it is rare to find a commercial operation that will commit to proper care. (It's all about bus tubs and high volume turnover)

Hope it works out for you.

Rob!

Anything put on a custom knife (except maybe aluminum) is gonna take a pounding
soaking in dishwater, let alone a dishwasher.
Ken.

I wouldn't trust pins and epoxy, but epoxy and Corby bolts should at least keep the handles from falling off. The blade, on the other hand...

Oh, and no wood. Needs to be synthetic unless you really want that weathered look very quickly.
