Handle materials

I'm putting a handle and guard on an old knife. The knife is large, more or less of a bowie design. The knife has a straight (non tapered) tang which will be hidden.

I'm looking for a durable material that I can get in thick chunks to make the handle. Any suggestions? A source for the material would be helpful, too.

Any of the knifemakers supply houses should be able to help you in this area. I am most familiar with K&G in Arizona (phone number 520-537-8877)and Texas Knifemakers Supply in Houston (phone 1-888-461-8632). Texas Knifemaker's Supply has an internet site at:

Either of these two places can help you. There are many, many more out there, these are the two that I am most familiar with.
