Handle modification?

I want to change the handle on a Swamp Rat M6.

It's a full tang knife made with differentially heat treated SR-101 steel (similar to 52100).

What's the easiest way to cut it without changing the temper of the blade.

What type of bit would you suggest for drilling a hole?

Thanks for the help.

Hardened steel is a bitch to cut. No matter what you use it will heat up the steel. Carbide bits are best for drilling hardened steel and they are expensive.

When it is hard you have to grind it away. Most cutting tools will be ruined on hardened steel. Grind slow and dunk in the water bucket often. It will be slow, but you can do it.

If you have a professional metallurgical lab in your area they might be able to cut it for a fee. They have abrasive saws that will cut it very slowly, while keeping it flushed with coolant. I'm sure they'll have a charge for this, if they're willing to do it.
