I need help figuring out what pin material to use on a handle. I'd like to add a pin to this but cannot decide what will look right. I have stainless steel, brass, mosaic, and can probably come up with copper. The guard is mild steel that has been etched. The handle is water buffalo rib bone with an ebony wood spacer.

Suggestions please????

I think a single, sun-burst file-worked (if that makes since) mild steel pin pressed in about 1/3 of the way down the handle and then etched would look great.

I hadn't thought of doing any kind of file work on the pin but I like that idea. Any idea where I can get some mild steel pin material? Maybe some kind of welding rod? A bolt or a nail?

Thanks,

A construction nail would work, a guess they are mild steel & I agree Nathan's idea. An etched pin close to guard would look great. BTW it is a beautiful knife...

My local hardware stores carry mild steel pin material, right next to the "welding steel" barstock.

A lovely knife. I think it deserves a solid gold pin; very small say a 1/16th of an inch.
It would contrast the other materials nicely.

Thanks for the ideas guys. James, I'll check the local True Value for that pin stock you mentioned.

Fred, the gold would look good in contrast but I don't have any mild steel pin material around. I sure don't have any gold pin stock. It would look good on that handle though.

I may try to build another bowie in the future with some nicer materials. I'd like to do a straight bowie with a tighter damascus and I have a cool piece of Oosic. But that is a project for another day.

Thanks again,
SDS
