hey everyone....i need some help....what's the name of that little rasp or file people use to widen the hole for a tang....alot of people make them from old files and cut some notches in the end.....is there anywhere i can buy one.....i know nick wheeler had a pic of one in his progression thread a while back....thanks for any help....ryan

IIRC it is called a broach. Seems to me that someone called it that on one thread...I hope:confused:

They are called "broaches", Ryan. The one Nick has was made by John Perry, who doesn't have them very often, it seems. I recently bought one of these from Uncle Al's. It cuts wood ok, but won't set the world on fire.

You can make a tool by taking either a couple saber-saw blades or reciprocating saw blades, grinding off all but the first 4 teeth, and soldering them into a brass/stainless tube. Now, those little suckers will eat some handle material! They just aren't as snazzy looking.

I saw one here http://www.usaknifemaker.com/ day before yesterday. Give them a call, and they should be able to hook you up.

Mods, if I'm breaking any forum rules by posting a link to a business, please let me know. I've seen it done in the past, but not sure about it. Other places may have a similar tool, but I just happened to see exactly what ryan9977 was after there.
