Handle wrapping on a Boye Basic 3

Thanks again, Gary. I think part of the problem in keeping things even may have been the curved handle & finger cut outs on the Rekat. I'll have to dig around for a more suitable blade. I guess, as you said, it will just take some practice.

In lieu of the vice grips, you might want to try some spring steel "binder clips". The jaws on the big ones open to about an inch. I've found the smaller ones handy when I make leather sheaths -- they hold the welt in place while the glue dries.

Brian, aah, another leathersmith! I use the same type of clips when glueing the sheaths together, must lay another piece of leather on top before clamping as those clamps can mark up the sheath and worse transfer the black from the clip to the leather!

The old saying `How do you get to Carnige Hall?' Practice Practice Practice!

Good Wrapping!

Gary,

I had seen your leather work earlier, but didn't make the connection until now. You do some really beautiful stuff. About those knuckle knives, though...

Yeah, I've been playing with leather myself for 20 yrs or so as a mental health break, not a commercial venture.

My next project is some sheaths for 3 Bauchop Alley Cats (different native African wood handles) that I bought recently. If I ever get around to taking some digital pics, I'll post them. Have you played around with Kydex or Concealex at all? I've been thinking about it, but hate to have to buy such a large quantity of materials (i.e., 100 of each type fastener, etc.) for an experiment.

Thanks for the heads-up on the binder clips. I never had the black transfer to the leather, but I can see how it could happen. As to the marks they can leave, I actually position the clips so that I can use the marks as a guide for lacing/stitching.

Brian,

No, not any kydex yet, still working in leather. The clips really can transfer the black if the leather is at all wet! and I used to do the clamp over the thread line but since I had the black stuff come off once I use pieces of leather, which also helps by giving more clamping pressure due to the thicker bite the clamps have to make, the kids hate the smell of the Barge cement that I use, but they think nothing of the finger nail polish or cleaner, man that stuff drives me nuts!

When you get a chance I'd like to see the work you do, sounds like some nice knives too!

Gary knife went out the a.m. Also a question if I might. I have two Dennis Miles knives that need sheaths. These are forged period correct for the late 1700's early 1800's. ONe is a small hunter the other a larger belt knife. Let me know if you are interested. Let me know how you like the Black Jack. thanks

Longbow,

Tried to email you, need your address again to send the Boye Basic3.
Thanks!
