Handle Wrapping

Hey all..

I was interested in putting a wrapping on a tanto handle, much like one you would see on a Japanese sword or on the CS Imperial Tai Pan.

Does anyone have any ideas where to find a resource for this kind of thing? I've been told that you can use just plain black shoelace, but it's the wrapping system that looks like it will be a bear..

anyone tried this before?

Unless someone answers you, I saw this on a Crawford knife, so maybe they can help you, if you call them.

I know very little about the subject but check out these sites:

This page oughta help ya some when it comes to doing the wrap..

One tip.... practice!! starting out with flat shoelaces on a broomstick will get ya started in no time....

Hope it helps, Alan....

I made a tanto of A2 tool steel and applied sting ray skin and cord wrapped the handle, using a method that RJ Martin demonstrated at Ashokan last year, below is the results, it's chisel edged and 11 1/2" blade of sharp steel the cord wrap is epoxy coated.

I also came across a book that showed the proper way to wrap the handle, the link above has a similar piece but maybe this would be clearer;

Tom,

I ordered a video on Tsukamaki from Japanese swordsmith Tatsuhiko Konno on the west coast for $25.00. The video is pretty good, a little on the low quality side, informative none the less, it's the closest one will come to getting direct instruction on tsukamaki from a Japanese swordsmith. The address for the video is:

The links and pictures in the above post are pretty much all you need to get started, those are where I got started. I found the video was helpful in tieing the final knot at the end of the knife/sword. I found that using some soft jaw vice grips between each wrap is helpful in keeping your wrap tight and eliminates some stress off of your hands. Using a 3/16" wide wrap for a tanto blade seems to work nice for me.

You can also get supplies like Tsuka-Ito (silk cord - $3.50 per foot) and Same (Stingray skin - $70.00) at Bugei Trading Company.

Take care,
Tom
