handled the new Chinese Schrades yesterday

I went to a flea market and a vendor had a copy of the 96OT. The first thing I noticed is that the shield has some sort of etching/decoration around the outside edge of it. When I picked it up it seemed lighter than a real Schrade, it may be my imagination but it felt different. The scales had small gaps where they met the bolsters. The backsprings had about half the snap of American Schrades. The etch on the blade was poorly done, it was light and pieces of letters were missing. The box displayed the American flag in the lower right corner and on the end flap it was marked "made in China". The asking price was $22.
Overall, it was a poor quality knife and I looked at a couple of them and they all seemed to have similiar problems. At least we won't have a problem telling the difference between the old and new.

Thank you, PhilW. Interesting, as I have not seen and held a Taylor/Sch**** yet. I'll be honest, I am going to buy one, if I am sure I am getting it at way below dealer cost, if only to examine it and compare it. I am happy these knives are selling on ebay cheap and at flea markets. Water and crap always seems to find it's own level.

The American Flag on the box is getting to me.

Schrade used an Old Timer shield with a 'rope' type decoration around it a couple of times for special issues. The 'Classics' in the tin, I think.

These things are starting to flow into the wholesaler pipeline. I have an online place where I buy at a great price, and I was checking yesterday for any stray Schrades (they seem to be getting a few Real Ones now and then) and almost clicked 'Add to Cart' on a 167UH when I noticed the small print- Made in China.

Phil

Schrade name, American flag on the box, and made in China. Some corporations have no shame or soul.

It felt different because it was different. Or as dexlectic Jack Webb ( does anyone remember dragnet) would say only the name hasent been changed to protect the guilty. LT

Greenspan and others blame what's happened to companies like Schrade on this "country's insatiable appetite for foriegn made goods," IMO this is nonsense, it seems to me the real problems are that many people are addicted to the "super discount marts" and others just don't care. This weekend as Independence Day approaches I would like to think that every American would consider the many sacrifices our WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans have made in fighting communism and fascism and, if only on this holiday weekend, refrain from buying any American brand product like Schrade that is now made in communist china. If everyone made their purchases-even if the price was a little higher- based on country of origin not the brand name on the box, we could show respect for our founding fathers, our veterans as well as the American worker. Maybe this is too much to ask.

Sounds like the new "Schrades" meet the quality standard set by the Cliphanger.

Back when Japanese-made automobiles started kicking the posteriors of American automakers, a lot of people started complaining that it just wasn't fair that Detroit should have to compete. Well, compete it did and -- imagine that -- the quality of American-made cars went up thanks to the competition.

People buy a lot of crap that's made cheaply in China and they do it because it's cheap to buy. Don't fool yourself, though -- anyone who is capable of understanding the difference in the first place who buys a Chinese folder for a dollar knows the difference in quality between that and a forty-dollar CRKT or a hundred-and-fifty-dollar Spyderco.

I own a few Chinese-made "tactical lights." I don't rely on them. I rely on much more expensive lights made here in the United States because the quality is higher. When the Chinese can produce goods that rival ours in quality at those same low prices, we should be really worried. Until then, we get more or less what we pay for. And damn it, I just ended a sentence with a preposition and started another with "and."

Eknifeworks.com has a new Schrade that says it is made in the US. It's a muskrat with yellow handle slabs and one of the blades is a spey.

I can only imagine that this is made by Camillus, but I still hate giving money to Taylor.

In order to circumvent the made in USA and flag logo a large order was given to an american knife company on contract. The contract price was 8 to 12 dollars apiece ( depending on model ) and this was done as an end run to further confuse the issue.( of labeling) By the way this is a deep dark secret. Where you fellows been welcome aboard. What I like about the communist chinese knives is that much of the labor is done by political prisoners ( who in many cases are our allies and are in jail just for that reason ). No OSHA problems over there regarding safety for say the production of pearl handles and the carcinagens they cause heck when one dies just put another dissident on the machine. No labor problems salarys are fixed one bowl of rice a day ( er maybe). Every time we buy a chinese knife we are using it to cut our own throats. They say it aint over till the fat ladys sings well its time to start listening because shes playing taps. As far as the issue of competition here is another point. Schrades original best sellers were there lines of automatic knives ( switchblades oooh what a scary word ) take a look around at what is being sold today talk about scary how about that new ( chinese) toy that looks like Edward sissorhands attached to brass knuckles ( Freddy Kruger style ) yep perfectly legal, by the way, what is the purpose of that particular tool? Well it dosent matter because we are safe yup because that 100 year old Schrade double with a 1,1/2" blade ( designed so that a woman would not break her fingernails opening a knife when sewing ) is still illegal. Excuse me the subject was competition. Foreign automatic knives are flooding into this country and now through the internet are easier to get on line than cigarettes or viagra. Competition is fine so how about leveling the field if Schrade could have competed legally with this market they would still be in business. I guess since it is such an idiot law only americans should be subject to its enforcment. AHH SOOO LT

Well, no Chinese Schrades for me.

No Chinese knives of any sort for me - Buck, Byrd (Spyderco),whatever.

Quality knives from Taiwan, such as CRKTand Spyderco, are okay with me, although I don't have Taiwan-made knives yet. Maybe someday.

But made-in-China: no.

Thankyou I was on a roll probably to much geritol in my pablum. Just another exercise in futility. LT

Not so...there is increased awarness of how the trade imbalance w/ChiComm is effecting the American economy...at least on the Knife front, a retailer told me today that he is reducing his low end product line and strengthening his domestic offering due to....and this is the magic word....public demand...he said consumers aged 28 and older simply will not buy a Chinese-made knife....On the news this evening I saw a Chinese textile manufacturer lamenting how their quota for importing socks to the US is met by March or April of every yr, and how the Chinese textile industry will have to lay-off 150,000 or so workers and how Americans would most likely be rioting for socks by the 4th of July if we did not do something...give me a break, how many millions of jobs has Walmart farmed out to China? China is trying to buy Chevron, the 4th largest gas co in the USA....to insure China's future, not ours...

Ive seen the pics of these also, really sad. I hated it, but I knew that when taylor bought schrade it was going overseas, I hate being right about this. Their past business practices pretty much confirmed this. Im glad I bought a few of the old ones before they went completely under. Its so sad to see what has happened.

On a different note the muskrats smoky is selling seem to be pretty decent.

Is this one of the heathen chinee models?

It does appear to be a commie collaboration. WHere is Joe when you need him?

Notice on the side of the box it states:
"Taylor Brands LLC"
If it's Taylor posing as an OT or UH you can bet that it's Chinese.

A question to the Schrade experts here (that's not me, unfortunately).....

Are those brass bolsters on a FAUX UH serpentine stock knife???
I know they made fixed blade knives with brass guards/pommels, but did Schrade make Uncle Henry folders with Staglon and brass bolsters?

JMO, but..... :(

Bill

I believe all the new ones are nickel. Sometimes in a picture they will look brass due to the effect of the camera flash. I have never seen an original Schrade UH with brass but my knowledge is limited.

I can't make it out. This did remind me of an OT with Brass, the 24OTX. It's the black Xtimer version. Everything else I have seen as far as UH with Staglon or OT with brown Delrin has been nickel. Maybe someone who has Robert Clemente's book can help out.
That reminds me, I have been meaning to order a copy but I think I remember something being posted about a newer, updated edition in process. Anyone have any info, if not I will email Mr. Clemente and find out.
