Alright so here is my predicament. I have all the designs for making handles knives but I want to use screws. Now all I have is a dremel and power drill. SO what is this talk of countersinking and counterboreing, explain. And can you give me a an idea on what type of screw and countersink to use and all that sha-bang.

When you say screws what are you referring too? corbys, loveless, bicycle chain, etc....?

countersinking is re-drilling with a larger diameter drill bit and taking part way down the previous hole to allow for peening, or the shoulder on a corby.

counter boring is used to get the exact size hole you need, most drill bits are not as accurate as they need to be.

If you are using flat-head screws, you'll want to countersink the holes so they lay flat against the scale. If you are using pan-head/button-head screws, Corbys or Loveless bolts, you'll want to counterbore the holes to provide a good seat for the bolt head to snug up against.

I think it would be helpful if you would post a picture of what you are attempting to accomplish with screws. That way people can offer you more specific answers and advice, as opposed to a general treatise on countersinking/counterboring.
