Sal: how about a handle that on the clip side has several teflon or something like it inserts..as well as a coating on the INSIDE of the clip to help eliminate drag and pocket wear..like "slick strips"????
I have lots of pants that have tell-tale knife rubbing wear..
And the same thing on the butt side of the knife especially where it contacts the inside of ones pants leg or pocket..
Anyone else havre pocket-pants wear?
My navigator ate a hole right where the tip of the butt rubs on my pants...

Friction eats pockets. It also keeps the knife from falling out and getting lost. I'm not sure I want a slippery clip, but sharp points and agressive corners are a definite no-no on the handle of a daily carry knife. I rounded off a corner of my AFCK, the part of the handle that lies directly under the thumb grooves when the blade is open, for precisely the reason addressed by Bram: it ate a hole in my pants.

Stop when you get to bone.

Actually, I think that is heat-shrink tubing. Available at a Lowe's home center near you....

Hi Bram - We're working on a plastic coated metal clip, primarily to avoid the sharp edges. We believe it is the edges of the clips that cause clothing or paint damage.

Interesting point on the inside "butt" (or hilt). I'll bring it up to the "R&D crew". See what we can come up with.

I'm also open to suggestions from the forumites. It's time for clip refinements. Put on your "inova" hats.

Bram: try polishing the clips' inside surface area that rests on the scale. It will allow for a smoother draw but will still have enough tension to stay put in the pocket. Same for the scale area if needed. I have done several BM Leopards and Cubs for a few friends/ customers and they say it is so much smoother on the draw. Their gritty AL scales causes too much friction the way it comes from the factory. Try it, you' ll like it!

If you mean clip refinements in general, how about a clip like EDI uses, a low profile clip.

The only pants I have with any noticeable wear are my BDUs. Of course I do spend most of my day in uniform.
I haven't had too much of a problem overall though I did have to adjust the clip a few times to get it "just right".

Sal: I think the new "spoon clip" will/may eliminate alot of stess by being rounded..
Yes..on regular clips I like the idea of something , a coating to protect my pants..hmmm maybe I should just market the "knife pants"..LOL!
Fellow forumites..thanks for some cool ideas to retro fit-fix existing clips!!!!

maybe beveling and rounding the edges of the handle on the clip side so that no "edges" actually rub on the pocket...
eliminate sharpnes where it can contact the pocket????

Sal,
How about taking the best proporties from three clips.
The Klotzli Warncliff folder CHW2 locates the clip in the best position for concealment, this can even be improved on by building the clip base in a modified U pattern that aligns with the outermost points of the liner.
Your Military has a large indention as to fit over web belts, affording the least contact to pockets.
Your Pro Grip has the rubber insert at the contact point for non abrasive friction.
By combining these traits and ridding it of sharp edges you would have a clip that is secure, non abraisive, as well as highly concealed.
Just an opinion.

Bram - Current clips are all hand polished or tumbled to remove "sharp" edges. I think the problem now is "hard" edges, rather than "sharp" edges.

Bo - Our original Clipit protos were "low profile" (1981). I'm not convinced that "low profile" clips are an advantage. Our Centofante and Calypso models are very low in profile but still accessible. If they were any deeper, they would be more difficult to get out of the pocket IMO.

I find the EDI style of clip difficult and slow to access. This defeats the purpose of a clip in my opinion. I designed clips originally to make the knives easier to put into use, not to hide the fact that I had a knife.

Bill - The kraton inserts in some of the models like the C13 (Pro Grip) met with many not liking that style. Those that wanted the knife more secure liked it, the rest changed to a regualr steel clip or purchased a different model.

FWIW, Sal, the clip set-up on the C05 Standard is dang near perfect, IMO. Well, as is the knife. Too bad you guys are discontinuing that one; at least I already have mine.

Maybe we should make knife blades out of staples!

Sal:
The main thing I'd like to see on the new clips is some way brace the clip more seccurely at its base. Some people have said their clips caught on something and the clips now spin around because the Zytel at the clip's base got worn away. It hasn't happened to me, but it remains a concern, esp. if carrying the knife in a physically demanding work or outdoor situation.

I don't know how that could be accomplished. Perhaps insert a steel base where the clip screws in, the base somehow a permanent fixture in the Zytel. Of course, I don't know how much that might drive up the cost of the knife.
