anyone out there hear of using bowling balls for handles??.also what kind of glass and thicknes should one use on is platen to get a good flat grind.? thanks royboy

Yes, they use bowling balls.
Plate glass for the platen, attach with superglue. Chaeck the archives for both there is a bit more info here.
