Just thought I would share this in case anyone is interested. Awhile back I saw where a couple of makers were discussing finishing handles on knives and they were saying that they ground the scales only so far and then finished the rest with files and sandpaper. Another maker showed me how he does handles and I have done it his way ever since and has saved a lot of hand work. You have to have a grinder that you can use slack belts on to do this. He uses "1x72" scalloped JFlex belts. I start with 120 grit and then go to 400 grit and by going slow and taking my time, I can get the scales to where there is very little hand work to be done as far as shaping them.

Walt, I do it the same way but don't bother with buying the fancy scalloped belts. I take pinking shears and cut the belts. Saves me a lot of trouble and money lol

so what's the function of scalloped belts? just to keep from digging the edge of the belt into the material?

i do this same method also... you can roll off the edge of the belt to work on curves and stuff it works out really nice.
just doesn't work for beans with bolsters on a knife

I gotta try the scallope edges,I got pinking shears to so I will be trying it soon...

Thanks for the advice,
Bruce

I heard about those scalloped edge belts from Joe Marsillo, heard they are the bee's knee's.

This is funny , I've been wondering about scalloped belts too. And to be honest with you, I've only just noticed them being advertised in the supply catalogs in last 6 months or so. Is it a fairly new product or have I just been missing them ?

I guess I'm going to have to try them out too  :D

I use J-Flex belts for handle finnishing, slack belt on curves, also use small wheel on tight curves such as finger grooves. Very little hand sanding done in my shop,on handles that is. turn the speed down and go slow. Would like to know more about the scalloped belts, where can I find them.

Nahhh they're old, the first guy that taught me about knives errrr probably 10 or more years ago used them. He had the store boughts and the pinking shear edged ones.

I have been getting them from TKS. The way they have them listed looks like there are two different types. The ones the other fellow told me to try was the ones that they say "these work great for corners" and the catalog # does not have a x at the end. Sorry for taking so long to answer about where to get them, I was out of town last night and today.
