Handling the Para without using the choil?

Greetings you all:)

I copied/pasted this from the Spyderco forum because I really would like to hear some opinions from you as well;)

For the past few day I have been carrying/using my D2 Para/SE almost exclusively.

It's a kick ass knife, but it only feels good in my hand when using the choil. When I don't use it and grip it like I do with my Military, my index finger and pinky are both half way the bumps of the choil and the pommel.

When I grip tightly this way it really feels uncomfortable to my index and my pinky.

When using the choil the knife really becomes an extension of my hand like no other Spydie has done so far.

So how about all you Para users with big meaty hands?

added: I really don't want to modify the handle with the risk of screwing up a one of a kind knife. I'm not very handy and patient:o

I'd really like to know.

Thanks very much for reading

I can see how the handle might be a touch small for those with large hands. Add on to that the fact that the choil is a bit narrow for big fingers, and it seems like a knife designed more for those with medium-sized hands. From what I hear, the rearmost protrusion of the handle can be ground down fairly easily, for a more comfy grip. I think Vivi has done this to his old Para. Just be sure to use a good mask, I hear G10 is nasty stuff.

I've got x-large hands but my fingers aren't really long. I've tried both on the choil and below it and really have no issues personally. It feels right both ways. Guess I'm lucky.

I think it doesn't bother me because i rotate my EDC's so much that they each have their own grip personalties.

I always used the choil on mine. Felt great.

Ever since handling a native, finger choils have been high on my priorities.

I use the choil for most everything..
heavy cuts with gloves , I back up and use three fingers and wrap my pinky around the but..
I can easily modify this.. But the design works.. So I wont.. T
Plus... With a tip up clip.. You can squeeze four fingers into the grip rather easily..

i like using it with the choil. i don't have meaty hands but i have large hands and the handles just aren't as comfortable without the choil. wish it were a little wider though (the choil).

I don't think I have big hands but the moment I held the para I knew a minor adjustment would have to be made. Are there any pics of the "sanded down pinky hooks"?
T

I find it handles great in the choil or out. Feels familiar already and I've only had it 4 days. It feels like an old friend that I've had for 10 years. :)

I've only got size 8 hands, and I've always found most of the 'ergonomically specific' Spydies to not fit all that great - including the para. It's fantastic with the choil, but otherwise not - I've got three, and all were modified previously to reduce the retention "bump/swell" at the end, or eliminate it completely.

Another mild issue I have with the Para and Millie is the extra length of the handle at the end - something like almost 3/4 inch past where the tip is. perhaps making the backspacer full and extending the blade to make it a bit more proportional?

That said, very FEW people (except ogres ;)) won't be able to handle the Military... and it is awesome.

I don't use one, precisely because it does not fit my hand. I would if it did. Of course, there's a Spyderco for everyone and there are plenty of other designs that fit perfectly.

If you run a search you should be able to find photos of the one I modded. It worked pretty well and required very little sanding. The original para wouldn't fit my hand without using the choil either. Decided to just go with the military, as much as I like the compression lock.
