Here's a few pics I finally have time to post. This is my not-quite-complete-sort of minimal type edc-able gear. The Civilian Lab harness bags I posted in another thread, but never showed what was in them, some of this stuff I just added within the last few weeks.

The fishing kit can still needs some braided line, but there is a good assortment of hooks and jigs and a few artificial baits. The fire kit has two pieces of fatwood stacked and a ton of packed dryer lint. I have a third can, but am unsure of what to put in it. The pieces of 220 grit grinding belt are kind of a quick and dirty sharpening method.

I like this set up because it's hands free, very adjustable, accessible without removing it, and concealable if needs be. I can also throw it all in a pack or wear it under a pack.

Any suggestions for more lightweight stuff that night be handy? -Matt-

i would say add a couple of sheets of higher grit paper, maybe around 600 grit. this will give you a better edge finish, and a slice or two of paper takes just about no room at all, especially if you are already carrying it.

If you substitute the dryer lint for some vaseline cotton balls it would take up less room and it burns longer.

You mentioned the braided line which is great, but I would add a float. a cork from a wine bottle would work fine

Duct tape, bandaids aren't the greatest in wet weather.

By the way I love the shoulder holster

I really want to see how these hold up in the field. It looks like a great way to stow gear...

tony, you made me think of something i saw in the hardware store the other day, duct tape bandaids.

but i usually just use cloth medical tape.

also to grease man- i suggest adding a tube of krazy glue or equivelant...but make sure you get a bottle, not a foil tube. i have had those leak in my wallet before...not fun.

also, something like a razor blade or two is handy to have around for various small tasks, or for when someone wants to borrow something to cut with.

if i had a setup like that, i would also toss in some earplugs and some paracord or braided mason's line. i would also toss in a small multitool like a folding pliers or a SAK probably.

instead of the mini mag, i suggest looking into some of those lower-cost tactical LEDs that take normal batteries (i am looking at these: http://www.arcflashlight.com/arc-aaa.shtml)

Yeah me too! I've only carried it once on a flat trail, but many times just "around". Once the doc clears me for heavier duty use of my legs, perhaps the end of August, hopefully I'll be able to get it into more rugged terrain, take it hunting etc.

All the suggestions are great ones! I can't believe I couldn't come up with more of them myself! :o

Since there is limited space, I trade out items quite a bit, like cell phone, wallet, I have several flashlights (one with LED), a Leatherman Surge, and a few other things. Kind of a mix and match to the environment I think I'll be in that day kind of thing. One side is more woods oriented, the other more edc/urban.
Keep the ideas coming guys! Thanks for all the suggestions so far! -Matt-

Exacto knife/(like single edge razor blade use) with sharp point.
DECENT tweezers (not SAK), antiseptic, DEET, a few cable ties.

Think injury and prepare to repair it.

Have fun.

Hey grease-man, that set up looks interesting. Any chance of a picture on somebody, you, wife, playmate, whatever, to see what it looks like when it's worn?

I wholeheartedly agree with a previous comment about ditching the Mini Mag for an LED (and not Maglites, BTW - I've had a bad experience with them)

I agree with Kismet that decent tweezers do not include those from a SAK even though I'm a huge SAK fan.

Instead of the Exacto knife, I would suggest one of these:

And siguy, you mentioned braided mason's line - have you ever found any that holds a knot very well? I've been looking for some for quite awhile to make slings with, but all the stuff I've found doesn't knot worth a darn.

Doc

Thats a cool little knife doc. I will have to keep an eye out for one to replace the razorblade in my pelican PSK.

I too would love a pic of that rig worn. It looks neat!

Hey jw, these are supposed to supersede earlier models that apparently had a safety issue. Might be something to keep in mind.

I think what happened is the piece that supports the sharp part of the blade wasn't deep enough and under certain circumstances allowed the blade to pop out.

The thing I like about it is the replaceable blade and the sturdy way to hold it.
It would be quite easy to toss in a couple of extra blades - not much extra weight.

Doc

yeah, extra blades would be minimum weight for their value.

Did they pull all the earlier models or might their be a few still on the shelves places?

That safety issue is a big concern if its to be a psk item, is there a way to tell by lookin at em?

They probably pulled them by now. Here is one link. There are more if you do a search.

Doc

doc, i found a spool at my local hardware store in the strings, ropes and cords area. it was in with the waxed mending twine and small diameter cords.

i have used it for several slings, but have moved onto thicker stuff becuase i don't use a seperate loop, just tie the finger loop into the end of the cord. the thin stuff cut into my finger some with heavier ammo. also, the retention knot on the release cord was harder to hold onto.

I'll try to get a couple of pics for you guys soon. Just don't make too much fun of my fatness! :p
id thow in a mora, just to have a fixed blade
A fixed blade, like this Kellam, fits nicely in the belt loop area behind the pouches. The mora clipper fits, but seems almost too tight. I have a FB from Tom Kernan that actually fits inside one of the pouches, so that's pretty handy as well. -Matt-
