Hanging a Plumb, All Help and Advice Appreciated:)

Very interesting. I have never seen that method before. What a great recommendation. I will have to remember that one. Nice work.

John, I've been following this post...You sure ended up doing a great job hanging your axe. Great advice guys.

Thanks to all. The jaw covers came off Ebay. A company out of California. They shipped super fast and had great communication and service.

Centipede # 45605 Soft Jaws Magnetic Vise Jaw Pads Grooved 4-1/2"

They are not "perfect," but they beat marking up your axe/handle and are more convenient than old clothing:)

I picked up an almost identical set of jaw protectors at Lowe's. IIRC they were about $8 bucks. There are two little magnets in each one.... They work well...But, they are a pain as the magnets are always pulling lose.

Thanks again. I had a blast, and learned a ton. I am hooked:) I'll post photos and such of my 3 Jersey patterns and a Kelly double bit I just scored yesterday as I work through them.

For now, what do you all think of the idea of drilling a hole at the bottom of the kerf to prevent splitting and possibly create more even expansion when the wedge is driven in? I just did it on the fly because of fear when making that perpendicular kerf.

Thanks!

John, I had to think about your idea of a small hole drilled in the bottom of a kerf. While I've never seen it done before, it sure seems to make sense to me. It is a proven way to stop a split or a crack in metal (Liberty Bell). I'm sure it can help. One just has to be careful that it isn't exposed below the head. Would you also do it the long way through a haft? I've never seen that done either. People just seem to depend on the eye surrounding the haft to prevent splitting.

Tom

I really like the hole drilling idea. I think its genius. I will do it next time I put in a cross wedge, but I don't think I will do it long ways for the main kerf. Awesome idea.

Great work on the resto and hanging....and a top wedging idea indeed!

Btw....good choice of ale. That's travelled a bit.

Yes on the ale. We have a great craft beer store in town that stocks a nice selection from the UK as well. I followed up the Bluebird with a stout from Lake Country.

A man can't hang axes on bread alone.

Top choice Mr Frankl sir.

I started my bramble winter ale at the weekend. Got three more ales conditioning already.
Its gonna be a very merry Christmas! ;)

Glad to have your approval, sir.

I may be in Cardiff, Wales for a conference in the spring. I'll go via London, and also take some time to see other places. I'll definitely be asking you for recommendations for what to see--and drink--when the time comes.
