When you hang an axe with a new handle, do you apply any rust protection inside the eye of the axe head before installing the handle? Do you guys use wax or oil for rust protection on your axe heads?

Back 30 years or so ago when Grandad taught me how to make an ax handle out of a chunk of Ash (after I had broken the original handle) we just drove it on when it was done and applied the wedge. Were I to do it now, I think a nice coating of premium slow cure epoxy would be a good idea. It would help keep the head tight and seal it from moisture.

If you use nothing it is much easier to clean out and put in a new handle. If you use some type of sealant or glue you will have a VERY difficult time cleaning it out for a new handle to go in.
